Costa Rica - A Nature Lover's Paradise

I'm a little behind! We spent some time in Costa Rica and enjoyed many of the natural wonders this amazing country has to offer. We flew in to Liberia in the northern part of the country. The airport is modern and convenient.

Trip Monkee Tip - Rent your car from a internationally known rental company

Next, it was off for a 3 hour drive to Jaco, which is a small, coastal town on the Pacific side. The condo we rented was fully equipped and was within a short walk to the beach. We would have preferred to be right on the water, but this was close enough. Jaco must be known for surfing as there were plenty of surfboard shops and lots of opportunities for instruction. Maybe next time!

We wandered around town seeking out places to eat local cuisine. Mission accomplished! We found a few places that we enjoyed and the rice and beans was like no other. We hired a local chef that came to our condo and made a meal for us on the spot. That was a great treat and a highlight of the trip.

Being in Costa Rica, we wanted to get close to nature. One way to do that was to take a 4-wheel trip up into the hills. Four of us took off on a private tour through the farm lands and up to the mountain top. We were treated to views and a waterfall for a quick break. There are plenty of opportunities for 4 wheeling and we suggest you take advantage of a 4 wheel excursion.

Trip Monkee Tip - take an extra pair of shoes and socks! You'll get muddy. But its worth it!

The next day we hired a private guide to take us on a walking tour through one of Costa Rica's national parks. This gentleman was knowledgeable of the floral, fauna and animals that he pointed out on our jungle stroll. He pointed out things that we would have walked past in our ignorance. At one point, we heard screeching, and sure enough, a group of monkeys were overhead checking us out. We were more interested in them than they were in us!

We took a side trip to Arenal where we stayed at the foot of the volcano. We were told that we were very lucky to get a full unobstructed view of the volcano. It's very often enshrouded in clouds. Well worth the long drive on sub-par roads to get there! Don't miss it!

We topped the trip off with the obligatory zip line activity. Very cool zipping above the tree line over 7 lines. Unfortunatley, we were a bit rushed trying to avoid a fast approaching thunder storm.

If you love the outdoors and want to partake in a variety of activities to be one with nature, Costa Rica should be on your bucket list.
